Flood in Brazil

Northern Brazil has been experiencing major flooding since 23 February 2015, following heavy rainfall in the region.

Cities located along the Acre River have particularly been affected, following the overflow of the river. It is believed that almost 2000 people are affected by the disaster.

The state of Acre has experienced some of the worst of the flooding because the Acre River passes through this state after traversing the border with neighbouring Bolivia and Peru. Brasileia, a city in the state, has reportedly suffered the worst flooding in city records. The water level along the River Acre peaked at 14.78 metres near the city.

Other cities affected in the state include the capital, Rio Branco, and Assis Brazil. Hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the flood situation and Brazilian emergency services have been assisting them in finding shelter until the water levels recede to a safe point.

The flooding has caused problems with power and communications in the region, and though emergency workers have managed to contain the flooding in some areas, it is expected that the flooding will continue, affecting more of the region.
